A Network Malware Vaccination Solution
September 6, 2018

The goal is to build a software solution that uses attacks we know about to characterize them by the method that could be used to  model and determine unknown attacks. The framework would enable a cooperative set of mitigations which could close the perimeter, so to speak, for nearly all attacks. The approach provides mitigation at a high level of abstraction to provide substantial layers of protection. The number of attack vectors that can be used is limited - there are only so many ways an assault can be launched on a device. Our goal will be to block any malicious activity using the same method, regardless of changes to its appearance or vector, preventing the malware from fulfilling its mission even if it already exists on a device. Each method will be defined at a sufficiently specific level, allowing a targeted mitigation approach for preventing the attack. Implementing Java Pathfinder (JPF) Technologies in Modern Cyber Security Solutions
January 17, 2014

With the existence of pervasive, ever-advancing cyber threats, it is very likely that you have experienced malicious intrusion upon your system. Avum has been researching and implementing modern, efficient cyber security methods to attempt to eradicate this issue altogether. This paper outlines a unique method researchers at Avum have been developing that combines current cyber security methodologies with JPF technology that can potentially achieve this goal. Data Analytics Modeling
Acquisition Decision Support Tool based on Avum's Cognitive Learning Application Framework
May 9, 2018

This paper investigates whether the neural network modeling technique can be confidently relied upon to meaningfully explore variable relationships within acquisition business datasets. The paper uses a direct action methodology to develop and test a prototype Acquisition Decision Support Tool based on a Cognitive Learning Application Framework, and tests the application’s feasibility using acquisition test data sourced from a variety of acquisition business system archives. The test hypotheses use a correlated performance-based analysis approach. The framework and resulting repositories facilitate the fusing of multiple data sources with the goal of creating an Acquisition Decision Support Tool and Business Intelligence repository for rapid dashboard development and an ad-hoc query capability. The primary focus for model development and predictability in this paper will pertain to the area of contract structure and terms relative to vendor performance. Click here to read our white paper.

An Autonomous Machine Learning Approach for Global Terrorist Recognition
November 12, 2013

A major intelligence challenge we face in today’s national security environment is the threat of a terrorist attack against our national assets, especially our citizens. This paper addresses global reconnaissance which incorporates an autonomous Intelligent Agent/Data Fusion solution for recognizing potential risk of terrorist attack through identifying and reporting imminent persona-oriented terrorist threats based on data reduction/compression of a large volume of low latency data possibly from hundreds, or even thousands of data points. Confessions of an Intern: Learning About Space Debris
November 6, 2013

Avum, being my first opportunity to perform professionally as an intern, I would like to offer a big thank you to Mr. Randall Mora, president of Avum for providing me this exciting opportunity. I was unsure of what to expect, but must say that I found it a most rewarding and very exhilarating experience. I now understand that formal education provides tools, but how they are applied is completely dependent upon customer needs. I hadn’t thought in terms of “customers,” but now understand that this is a two-way street. While supply side economics may indeed drive industry to move to new technology, it is more common that customer needs drive technological breakthroughs. At least that is my current perception, right or wrong. At Avum I am working with consummate professionals that are solving real world problems the solutions to which don’t fit any predefined expectations. That is, real world problem solving that requires continuing innovation. From my so far somewhat limited perspective, I can see that innovation is the conduit for applying my education to problem solving. I recognize that I have a long way to go in my career, but this seems like an excellent place to begin. And speaking of innovation, the draft of a paper I was recently asked to review, is an example of the forward thinking demonstrated by Avum. Senior Science Advisor, Mr. Jerry Hill, in this paper draws on his extensive experience spanning several decades, from the first satellite launch by the former Soviet Union to the present, and the hundreds of satellites launched from that first satellite launch until now. We have learned much since the first artificial Earth satellite, but may have inadvertently become victims of the unintended consequences of residual debris from those launches. The name of the referenced paper is, “Space Debris – History and implications, a Joint Functional Component Command for Space (JFCC SPACE) Solution.” This paper draws on Mr. Hill’s personal experience in the Aerospace/Space industry over a 55 year period, but from the unusual perspective of the residual debris left orbiting the Earth over the span of his career from the beginning of the space age until now. The solution to this problem may be left to those like me, just entering the industry. If so, this paper gives us a good starting point.
